B MODEL

The first modern services to come out in 1953 were the B and BA models, designed by Kaj Franck. The B model was a bowl-shaped, gently curved service with a more limited variety of different pieces. The individual pieces of the service could also be bought separately. All the items in the B model were designed to save space, and were stackable and easy to wash and dry. The service was made of earthenware.

A new technique was introduced the same year for making the pattern permanent by overlaying it with a transparent glaze. The first decorations for the B model were Linnea, a narrow leaf pattern around the edges, Taru, a coloured-line pattern, and Polaris (pictured below), a transfer depicting slender green branches which marked Arabia's first venture in under-glaze decoration. The decorations were drawn by Raija Uosikkinen.
